Reading
Is Fundamental, UK (RIF) projects
What is RIF?
Reading Is Fundamental, UK is an initiative of
the National Literacy Trust that helps children
and young people (aged 0 to 19) to realise their
potential by motivating them to read. Working
with volunteers, RIF delivers targeted literacy
projects that promote the fun of reading, the
importance of book choice, and the benefits to
children and families of having books at home. Visit the RIF
website to find out more: www.rif.org.uk
How does RIF
work with Reading The Game?
RIF projects allow children to choose and keep
three free books at reading motivational events.
Largely thanks to awards from the Football
Foundation and the PFA,
40 clubs have so far run a RIF project, with the
majority based at Playing
for Success study support centres, although
some run through their Football
in the Community teams.
Results from a
2005 report show that 96% of the coordinators
found that their RIF project improved children's
attitudes to reading. During the 2005/2006 academic
year, over 3,000 children received over 9,000
free books, and since 2002 over 9,000 children
have received over 27,000 books. Download
the report for 2005. You will need Acrobat
Reader. To find out if your local club has a RIF

Can I have
a RIF Project at my club?
Grants for RIF projects are extremely limited.
If you would like to set up a RIF project at your
football club you will need to raise funds for
this. For more details on how to go about this,
please email Jim
Sells.
