MCFC hosted the launch of Reading The Game in its famous Kippax
Stand in September 2002. To see the report on the launch click here.
They involve parents with their RIF
project as part of the Family Learning sessions run at half-term,
which provide ICT sessions for parents/carers. This also provides
a good opportunity for parents to be involved with book choosing.
The 'Blue Zone' (the Playing for Success centre) initially worked
with 60 Year 6 and 10 students for their RIF project.
Since this initial year of funding, City has successfully applied
to the Children's Fund to continue with and expand, its RIF project.
This means that all children who attend the centre from Spring 2004
will be able to choose free books and in the last year 360 children were provided with free books to choose and keep through RIF.
Study Centre Manager Lois Gyves says of the project: "Children
participating in the Manchester City program took part in a range
of literacy activities during the ten week duration. They also received
a visit from the MCFC Mascot. At their awards presentation they
were issued their certificates by the guest of honour Steve McManaman.
As part of their program funding they received £2,911 from the Manchester
Children's Fund."
Reading Champions: Nedum Onuoha, former manager Stuart
Pearce.
MCFC take part in Premier
League Reading Stars.
