Boston United's study support centre is one of the
first 10 football clubs who received a grant from Reading
The Game to run a RIF
project.
During the 2002-2003 season, 60 children from Years
5 and 8 each received three free books at distributions
held during their Playing
for Success courses. Twelve of these children were
identified as being particularly in need of a boost
by their teachers, and formed part of a reading group.
A final book distribution took place with all 60 children
as a 'literacy day' celebration. The centre has strong
links with its local library, and one of the Playing
for Success sessions regularly takes place there, bringing
an ideal opportunity for book selection for the RIF
project.
Complementing this library partnership, Study Support
Centre Manager Jan McLucas established a five week programme
with the library, with targeted Year 8 pupils helping
to design a teenage reading area. These research visits
enabled them to voice what they felt was needed to make
the library more appealing. For example, signage/identity
for the area, furnishings, colour schemes, range of
magazines, books, videos and notice-boards. Jan provided
the pupils with £250 and they added to this through
income generated from a non-uniform day and other events.
The whole exercise culminated in a power-point presentation
to library service personnel.
For 2003 the whole squad was pictured at their team photo shoot
with favourite children's reads to promote reading.
This image has now become a postcard and has been sent
out locally. The reverse of the postcard features quotes
from players about why they enjoy reading themselves.
Boston United has run a RIF
project, and the club has raised £100 from the BBC
Radio Lincolnshire Charity Fund.
