Non-RTG literacy activity

Northampton Town started its RIF project in September 2004. The Project is based at the Playing for Success Centre at the club.

The club has started a new programme springboarded by their RTG project - Cobblers Reading Stars (no relation to Premier League Reading Stars!) which sees boxes of football reads going into local schools. Read more about Cobblers Reading Stars. This programme has now been developed for a pilot RTG programme called Playing With Words (PWW) . Both the Cobblers and Preston North End ran this during the Spring term of 2006. RTG would like to thank the following schools for taking part in the pilot of PWW: Blackthorn Primary School, Standens Barn Primary School, Weston Favell Junior High School.

Northamptonshire has four Playing for Success centres and a common web site. This can be viewed by clicking on www.studycentres.northants.sch.uk. They were recently visited by the Chief Inspector for schools David Bell.

Here is a report from their first Reading The Game event, from Study Centre Manager Antony Witheyman.

Reading The Game kicked off this week [October 11th 2004] in style at Northampton Town Football club with the visit of club Captain Ashley Westwood, Vice Captain Chris Wilmot, Director of Football John Deehan, Chairman David Cardoza and Club Director Tony Clarke MP (Northampton South).

Children from Hopping Hill Primary school in Northampton were chosen by the Cobblers Study Centre to take part in the project. The children were asked to choose from over 100 books by traditional and contemporary authors, from Roald Dahl to Michael Morpurgo, as well as non-fiction books and comic books. The children and the players poured over the selection, and the club programme editor and local newspaper were on hand to record the event for their publications. The children have all been asked to write a book review of their chosen book that will appear on the Cobblers Study Centre Website www.studycentres.northants.sch.uk.

The children were thrilled to also recieve their book bags, book marks and book plates from Reading The Game.
