Everton started its RIF
project in September 2004. The Project is based
at the Playing for
Success Centre at the club, called Extra Time. The
club also has a Premier
League Reading Stars programme.
Everton's latest RTG venture has been to take part
in the BBC RaW Football Stories programme. Read the
case-study of this fantastic
event (October 2006).
Reading Champion David made a big deal of World
Book Day 2005 by attending the centre to talk to
students about what he likes to read.
In addition to David, a further ten players have suggested
their favourite reads.
James Beattie was recently on hand to present children
with special reading certificates, while children's
author Penny Dolan and Everton press officer Darren
Griffiths also took part, presenting the group with
their chosen RIF books. Read about the event.
Extra time played host to the 'Football Poets' at an
event which gave children
the chance to write about racism in football as part
of the 'Kick
it out' campaign.
The Toffees have jumped straight into their RIF project,
and have expanded it in 2005. Read about their 'Reading
Week' which saw club staff joined by Everton legend
Graeme Sharp, and stars Li Tie and Marcus Bent to help
pupils with their reading and to choose RIF books.
In 2004, they also benefitted from a visit from the author of 'Holes',
Louis Sachar, who was over on a trip from the United
States. Read about Louis's visit.
Everton have also taken advantage of the RIF Arts Council
grant which facilitates author visits to our projects.
