Literacy changes lives

The National Literacy Trust advocates a systemic, whole-community approach to raising literacy standards. Teachers' efforts to raise literacy standards in the classroom will be undermined unless they are supported by parents and by the wider community through partnership working. Other Government agendas, social inclusion and lifelong learning, also benefit from sustained partnerships for literacy which link to grass roots projects. The first National Year of Reading in 1998-1999 provided many examples of partnership working, and the National Literacy Trust continues this work through the National Reading Campaign.
