The arts, media and literacy

The death of the book has been much exaggerated. These pages show how the arts and media have affected literacy and how they can be powerful motivators for encouraging literacy. Arts Council England is the national development agency for the arts in England, distributing public money from Government and the National Lottery. Visit www.artscouncil.org.uk/

Creative Partnerships the Government's flagship programme for creativity for schools and young people, managed by Arts Council England and funded by the Department for Education and Skills and the Department of Culture Media and Sport. It was launched in 2002 to be piloted for two years in 16 areas. In 2003, funding was secured until 2006 and the programme was extended into a further 20 areas. The programme focuses on the most deprived communities in England and works with 1,100 schools. In February 2006 the National Foundation for Educational Research released an evaluation report The longer term impact of Creative Partnerships on the attainment of young people, available online at www.creative-partnerships.com/content/researchAndEvaluationProjects/ .
