Early Years

The Hanen programme,
developed in Toronto, Canada, has been designed to give parents the skills to encourage speech-delayed children to talk. Visit www.hanen.org

The Language and Play Programme (Wales) is designed to give information to parents/carers of 0-3 year olds and focuses on communication, language, literacy and play. The programme was developed in response to the concerns expressed by headteachers about young children's speaking and listening skills on entry to school. The programme is intended to complement the work currently undertaken by early years organisations such as Bookstart, Mudiad Ysgolion Meithrin, Twf, Wales PPA and Sure Start. The programme is a means of reaching families outside Sure Start areas and can be used in parent and toddler groups, playgroups, clinics, family centres, nurseries and schools. Over six thousand parents and young children, across Wales, took part in a Language and Play programme in the first year 2003/04. For more information visit www.basic-skills-wales.org .

D
iscover is a community-based children's centre opened in Stratford, East London in 2002. It aims to provide entertaining and educational experiences for two to seven-year-olds, and their parents, families, carers and teachers from East London and further afield. Children and adults explore and savour the value of stories and the blocks on which they are built: words, language and imagination. With hands-on activities, creative workshops, play, performances and storytelling, visitors are encouraged to express themselves and communicate in diverse and enjoyable ways. Primary

BT's Education Programme
aims to “help everyone in the UK understand and enjoy the benefits of improved interpersonal communication skills”. BT does this by:

• providing primary and secondary schools with a unique range of free educational resources, dedicated to supporting the teaching of speaking and listening skills.
• encouraging schools to become more active at promoting better communication.
• offering funds to schools that demonstrate novel ways for students to improve their communication skills.

Hull's Talk Project aims to develop talk-based learning through interactive group work, using techniques and strategies inspired by the work of the National Oracy Project. These strategies are generic and can be applied from foundation stage through to key stage 3, across all subjects.

The project was developed by the Education Development Unit (part of St Martin's College, Ambleside) on behalf of Thorpe Park Primary School and Foredyke Primary School, with links to their partner secondary schools, Sir Henry Cooper and Isaac Newton.

Talking partners
is a programme to boost speaking skills. It was developed by Education Bradford and the Centre for British Teachers. The scheme was originally developed for pupils with English as an additional language, but was expanded for any pupil who has poor speaking skills. Assessments reveal the 10 week programme can improve children's progress by more than a year, enabling them to achieve the level expected for their age. Teachers or teaching assistants work with small groups of three children. The 20 minute sessions involve activities such as children describing objects to one another for the other to draw it and role play games, where children take on character's roles from books, and are quized by others.

Investing in Voice:
a resource from ESSA, Investing in Voice is a programme to give the whole school community a means by which they can communicate their ideas. It provides schools with a way of measuring success of student participation activities and develop future student voice initiatives. Jack Petchey's "Speak Out" Challenge
is a public speaking competition for teenagers in the Southeast. Run by Speakersbank, a not-for-profit organisation, the competition begins with every participating teenager receiving a day of training in public speaking and effective communication. There are no restrictions on what the teenagers can talk about, no use of notes, no podiums and no barriers. For more information visit www.speakoutchallenge.com

Pupil2Pupil Peer Coaching
from the NUT was initiated to support the QCAs Taking English Forward Initiative. Pupils are encouraged to coach one another to find their own solutions. Speaking and listening skills are crucial so that students can communicate with one another and be a source of learning to others. Schools Question Time
is an intiative supported by BT, the Institute for Citizenship and the BBC, with the aim to help improve students' public speaking and listening skills and encourage participation in society and politics.
