Literacy changes lives

The National Literacy Trust is an independent charity that changes lives through literacy. In 2008, we celebrated 15 years since our launch in 1993.

One in six people in the UK struggle to read and write. Poor skills compromise health, confidence, happiness and employability. We believe that society will only be fair when everyone can communicate as well as they need. We believe that with better literacy skills, more people will have the opportunity to contribute more to society.

We campaign to improve public understanding of the vital importance and impact of literacy on all our lives.

We deliver projects directly to those seeking to improve their literacy.

We work in partnership with professionals and other organisations to facilitate projects to reach our most important audiences.

We investigate and innovate – seeking evidence and insight to measure and improve the effectiveness of what we do, and to better understand and support people who need help with their literacy.

We share knowledge – research, policy, analysis and news – and signpost to other resources as widely as possible.
