Data
protection and personal privacy statement
The National Literacy Trust is committed to protecting the
privacy and confidentiality of its website users and other
contacts.
We are based in the UK and our principal activities are providing
information on developing literacy and promoting reading,
and running a number of projects to develop innovative practice.
Our privacy policy covers the National Literacy Trust and all subsidiary projects.
Our website
Our website aims to provide accurate information on literacy
and related issues which meets the needs of all its users
- we welcome news and information for inclusion on the site.
We include links to third party web service providers and
are happy for other sites to link to us, providing clear acknowledgement
is made.
The site is developed in accordance with users' requests
for information. Overviews written by the NLT aim to provide
a synthesis of current fact and opinion and are not
policy statements.
Other information comes from a range of sources and where
these are cited, the views expressed are those of the authors
and not necessarily those of the NLT.
We do not use cookies on our websites and you can access
and browse them without disclosing your personal data. Anonymous
information is collected, such as the number of visitors to
the site in a given period, but it is purely statistical and
cannot be used to identify individual users.
Email addresses
We collect email addresses from those who voluntarily sign
up for any one of our free email newsletters.
We do not sell or pass on these addresses to any other organisation,
or use them for any other purpose ourselves. Other contact
details are not passed on without advance notification or
consent (or both).
Other personal data
We collect contact details for project partners, donors/supporters,
key practitioners and researchers so that we can finance and
carry out our work. Professional contact details provided
on this site are either taken from public sources or given
to us knowingly and used with permission.
In addition to the above, Reading
Is Fundamental, UK collects contact details for children's
book publishers and volunteers. This information is given
to us knowingly and voluntarily so that we can manage the
RIF initiative.
Our guidelines for use of personal data on our website and
in our publications:
- We will not give the personal data or full name of any
child in a photographic image
- We will not include personal email or postal addresses,
or telephone or fax numbers in any of our publications
- We may use group photographs with very general captions
such as, "Year 6 class choosing their RIF books"
- We will only use pictures of children who are suitably
dressed, to reduce the risk of such images being used inappropriately
- If we name a child in the text, for example, as the author
of a competition-winning entry on our website, we will not
use a photograph of that child to accompany the text
- We request personal data (for example, age and postal
address) from children only for the purposes of judging
competition entries and sending out prizes. This information
is then destroyed
- We seek permission from parents/guardians, either directly
or via project partners, to use photographs of their children
for promotional purposes and subject to the above guidelines
Our privacy policy is compliant with the UK Data Protection
Act 1998, and we are entered in the Data Protection Register.
