Charlotte's story
“My son Ryan is eight and has a speech and language impediment. When he was little, I had no idea how important it was to read to him. Ryan was a bit behind when he started school and he has struggled with his schoolwork since."
“When I had my daughter Louise, I wanted to do what I could to make an impact on her language development and reading, but I didn’t know how. I saw a flyer for a RIF event at my library in Greenwich and we went along together. Louise enjoyed it so much that we never missed an event. Since I started sharing books with Louise, she can never get enough of them. Thanks to RIF, Louise was able to choose and keep books that she loves. She carried them around with her everywhere – to the shops and the park. She asked anyone and everyone to ‘read it’. She even gave the books to her brother and his mates, and Ryan read to her. Louise and Ryan really encourage each other." “Sharing books has become part of our daily routine. And now Louise has started reading by herself, there’s no stopping her.”
Deon's story
...however, attending his first session of an NLT project at his local library with his Mum, Deon chose to borrow Cloud Busting by Malorie Blackman and found that he just couldn’t put it down. Storming through the book, Deon’s Mum was amazed to find that the following week he spent his pocket money on two more books!
"I was just shocked to be honest," she said."I’ve tried for years to get him into reading and it’s always been a struggle. And now all of a sudden, he reads when he gets home from school, and he even read aloud to classmates in school!"
Deon’s Mum attended a recent parents evening and was shocked again by the comments of his teachers. "They couldn’t believe his progress.Everyone said how much more confident he’d been in class, and how he was always putting his hand up to answer questions."
Ellie's story
...her Dad,
who also took part in an NLT project with Ellie, explained, "We didn’t actually go the library regularly until after the ground tour at the Reebok Stadium. The whole event was just fantastic, and as a Bolton fan – she loved meeting Kevin Davies.
"After that, the first thing she’d ask when she got up or when she got home from school would be are we going to the library today?
"The librarians said they haven’t seen anyone come into the library with such regularity for years! It just goes to show the impact that NLT projects can have."
Lewis' story
"Before I joined the programme I would just read books every now and again but now I am in the top level of reading at school and I read every night not only to myself but also sometimes to my brother and sister.
I found that reading helps me to escape into my own little world. My family has been through a really hard time lately and I have found that reading has helped me to escape from these problems.
Also, I know that I can enjoy harder books, because of the project I read Call of the Wild, A Kestrel for a Knave and The Hobbit. Now I read books like Harry Potter, Storm Catchers and other hard books.
I really enjoyed the project and have told all my friends about it and I would recommend it to everybody as I now think reading is important as well as fun.
I also feel that I have benefited from the scheme because my Mum did the scheme with me and it has brought us closer together as we do more reading together."
Cliff's story
...after borrowing Lance Armstrong’s autobiography It’s Not About the Bike Cliff found himself to be a changed man!
"I really enjoyed it," said Cliff. "The book explained in detail what Lance went through, and it was inspiring to find out how he dealt with everything.
"I was never an enthusiastic reader, but now I’ve started reading on the train on my way to work. It’s a great project, and now I’d encourage everyone to read more!"
