In November 2004, representatives of some of the UK's major corporations
attended a National Literacy Trust dinner which aimed to help us build closer
relationships with the business sector and bring them up to date on current
literacy policy and practice. The event was hosted by Rachel Lomax, deputy
governor of the Bank of England, and speakers included Richard Scudamore,
chief executive of the FA Premier League, and Ken Follett, bestselling author
and chairman of the Reading Is Fundamental, UK advisory board.
For this event, the Trust prepared an overview of business involvement in
literacy in the UK, including current evidence on levels of involvement,
details of the different ways in businesses can become involved, a summary
of the benefits and suggestions for promoting reading in the workplace.
